Amarillo Medi Park Lake receives catfish stock for 2024 Neighborhood Fishin’ lake season

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) – The Texas Parks & Wildlife Department announced that with the arrival of spring, Neighborhood Fishin’ lakes around Amarillo and other areas of the state will be stocked with catfish to provide anglers the opportunity to reel in a catch close to home.

Officials detailed that the TPWD will resume stocking catfish during the week of April 12 at the 18 Neighborhood Fishin’ lakes across Texas, including:

Five in the Dallas-Fort Worth area;

Four in the Houston area;

Two in Austin;

Two in San Antonio;

One in College Station;

One in San Angelo;

One in Waco;

One in Wichita Falls; and

One in Amarillo, via Medi Park Lake.

“Neighborhood Fishin’ lakes are conveniently located in urban and suburban areas, so Texans don’t have to travel far to have a great experience,” said Marcos DeJesus, TPWD Inland Fisheries Division Region Three Director. “Catfish are fun and easy to catch for anglers of all ages and experience levels. If you’ve never fished before, these are the perfect places to get started. If you are an experienced angler, these are the perfect places to introduce fishing to a friend or family member.”

The TPWD noted that these lakes, for the benefit of the program, are located in city and county parks with parking, lighting, restrooms, and other recreational amenities aside from fishing.

Each lake will receive channel catfish every two weeks through the end of October with the state program, except for a brief pause during August, for the sake of angling opportunities for community members throughout spring, summer and early autumn. Officials noted that anglers will be able to keep up to five fish per day at the Neighborhood Fishin’ lakes.

Although children under the age of 17 can fish for free, the TPWD reminded that adults who fish must have a fishing license. These can be purchased for as low as $11 for “one-day, all-water” access, with the proceeds heading toward the management and conservation of the fish.

More information on the Neighborhood Fishin’ Lakes program can be found on the TPWD website.
