Social media site Pinterest has launched its summer forecasting report and it has declared the biggest makeup trend according to searches and pinned looks.
Searches for this classic ‘90s makeup trend are up 760% for summer 2024
In hair trends, the site is calling Retro Highlights the biggest mover in what people are looking for with searches for Calico Hair up by 6500% and Chunky Highlighlights a la Avril Lavigne back in the day at 5400%.
Thankfully, we don’t have to have either of those looks but the 90s makeup trend that is capturing everyone’s interest right now wouldn’t look out of place in a Spice Girls video. Get ready for this gals, you will be really nostalgic for this one.

According to Pinterest, we are in the mood for a maximalist summer from decor to fashion, nails and food. Fruity manicures are trending, as are bold colours for the home, Bridgerton tea parties and dopamine dressing.
As for the ’90s makeup trend that is hitting an all-time high, it is side by side with another look from that decade – ’90s glam makeup which is up 280%. The trend we’re interested in is the one that is exploding right now.
’90s Makeup Trend

There are a few ways to interpret the ’90s Lip makeup trend. You could either go the full brown or tan lipstick look which effectively killed off red lipstick in the ’90s.
The decade previously was full-on red lipstick, no matter the occasion, and as the ’90s came around everyone was looking for something a bit edgier and modern. Bobbi Brown arrived on the scene with a tiny collection of brown-based lipsticks and that kicked off a lipstick revolution.
Lipstick & Liner

The easier way to wear this makeup trend is to go the other route that replaced dark lipstick towards the end of the ’90s into the ’00s – a darker liner and a lighter tan lipstick.
This has been edging its way into fashion for a while now and it looks very cool if the two shades are just marginally different rather than looking very obvious. Here are a couple of suggestions of what to pair together.
What To Buy

For value for money, it’s hard to beat Kiko Milano’s Everlasting Lip Pencil in the shade, 13 Almond and for creamy sheer colour and care we are smitten with YSL’s Loveshine Lipstick in 201.
You couldn’t have a ’90s makeup trend without mentioning MAC Spice Lip Liner, and for a little more depth of colour, we heart Iconic London’s Melting Touch Lip Balm in Strapless.
